Munich’s Reds have won the first trophy of the 2016/17 season after beating Borussia Dortmund 2:0 in the match for the German Supercup at the Signal Iduna Park Stadium in Dortmund tonight, August 14, 2016.
Arturo Vidal and Thomas Müller scored the second-half goals in a quality contest in front of a capacity 81,360 crowd at Signal Iduna Park as the Bavarians reclaimed the prestigious curtain-raiser trophy they last won back in 2012.
Bayern lined-up with Manuel Neuer in goal, David Alaba, Hummels, Javi Martinez and captain Philipp Lahm in a back four, Vidal, Xabi Alonso and Thiago in midfield, and Franck Ribery, ex-BVB man Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller up front.
The match drew great attention in Germany for many reasons. It was Carlo Ancelotti’s first competitive match and it was also the first match for Mats Hummels who has been Borussia’s captain in the previous season. Also, it was the first match of Mario Götze following his return from the FC Bayern to Borussia Dortmund. Götze was a substitute for Borussia and didn’t play tonight.
Thomas Tuchel’s home team included ex-FCB enforcer Sebastian Rode, with Mario Götze, the black-and-yellows’ other summer signing from Munich, starting on the bench, while Sebastian Rode, who also joined Borussia coming from the Munich Reds, played the whole match.
